Laurel Murphy has been singing in Vancouver since 1992. She has a formal education in jazz and improvisation, while her personal explorations have included various aspects of the healing arts. In 2004, these interests were brought together when the Callanish Society (cancer support services) invited her to work with them, providing soundscapes for their relaxation sessions. Through her continued work with Callanish, Laurel has become fascinated with the connection between sound, healing and states of relaxation. In 2010, she decided to expand on this work and invite a group of long-time friends from her improvisational singing community to join her in creating the Sound Journeys series for the general public. What Happens at Sound Journeys?
These sessions are about receiving. Participants rest their bodies and experience the power and pleasure of live sound
for deep relaxation, dream-like imagination, and meditation. Yoga mats, pillows and blankets are provided for you to lay with eyes closed in a safe and nurturing atmosphere. The Sound Journeys team weaves a tapestry of vocal, instrumental and atmospheric music, created in the moment and designed to gently guide you on your own inner journey. Some people experience vivid imagery, some are moved by the sensory qualities of sound. Every session is unique.
Research has shown that sound vibrations penetrate the body down to our DNA, affecting cells, immune function, emotions, mind and spirit. Find out what happens when this is combined with atmospheric instruments, live looping, vocal harmonies and healing intent. This truly unique surround-sound experience is created in the moment by Laurel Murphy and her team of gifted improvisational singers.
Laurel has been working with the Callanish Society since 2004 using sound in the context of healing and is excited about
offering this to the general public. Yoga mats and blankets will be provided. The floor is not carpeted, so if you think you will need extra cushioning or warmth, please bring what you need.
Each session features Laurel Murphy and 3 to 7 singers from the Sound Journeys team: Renee Doruyter, Jana Eidse, Dawn Howlett, Sara Marreiros, Heidi McCurdy, Carol Newell, Wendy Rubin, Ryan Slemko.
