Nearly every culture has ways for people to come together and join their voices in song. This may be for social or political purposes but very often it is to honor, rejoice or praise the divine in one form or another. Tonight’s show will  look at ways that singing communally can heal, reduce racism, create harmony and unity and open the heart to spirit. The directors of two of Vancouver’s popular multi-faith, multi-cultural gospel choirs will be our guests.

Eric Dozier bio highlights: Formerly the arranger for the world famous Harlem Gospel Choir and Musical Director for the award winning Children’s Theatre Company of New York City, Eric Dozier now resides in Victoria and leads choirs both on Vancouver Island and in Vancouver. A man of many talents, he also holds degrees in Public Policy Studies and Divinity from the esteemed Duke University. Eric devotes his musical, spiritual, and intellectual talents to eradicating social, religious, racial, gender, and cultural discrimination. Eric Dozier and the One Human Family Gospel Choir.

The Universal Gospel Choir is delighted to welcome Kathryn Nicholson as their new Music Director. An irrepressible singer and accredited music therapist, Kathryn has often witnessed and experienced the extraordinary power of voice and song in promoting health, healing and happiness. Over the years, her extensive career in health care has been consistently interwoven with the joy of music-making. She studied at the Royal Conservatory of Toronto for many years and has enjoyed singing in both amateur and professional musical theatre and choral groups – the Canadian Opera Company, Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, National Arts Centre Choir– in-Residence and, locally, with Pandora’s Vox women’s ensemble. She directed the Goulbourn Jubilee Singers for 6 years in Ottawa and, in Vancouver, was employed as the Music Director at the North Shore Unitarian Church for 14 years. In this position, she conducted both adult and children’s choirs, created and directed intergenerational pageants, vocal workshops and family music camps. A vocal instructor at Capilano College for several years, Kathryn has also been a guest soloist at various local events, most recently a major fund-raising concert for the BC Cancer Foundation, an International Multifaith Conference featuring the Dalai Lama, and a concert production of ‘The Armed Man’ at the Chan Centre. Kathryn says that this latest musical adventure, directing the UGC, is proving to be “a wonderfully joyful experience”. “I experience gospel music as very exhilarating and uplifting…..I believe the secular world can benefit greatly from its universal message of peace, hope and love. The UGC is an enthusiastic multifaith choir community, committed to excellence, musical authenticity, respect for cultural and spiritual diversity, charitable public service – and having fun! It is a great privilege for me to lead them in their singing.”
