James R. Cloughley is a retired addiction counselor for a Niagara area rehabilitation centre. He is a graduate of the Social Service Worker program at Niagara College and continued his studies at McMaster University. He is a member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Through his business, Millennia Consulting Services, he has developed an on-line counseling service, and provides training and development for industry and public sector agencies. He is also the author of “Managing Me … It’s an Inside Job,” published in 1997. He has two adult children, a son and a daughter, of whom he is immensely proud.
Boys with an absent father face a considerable and well-documented number of social, academic and emotional deficiencies because of a lack of mentoring from his father guide. In his new book, Port Colborne author James R. Cloughley addresses these issues as well as the uncomfortably new and unfamiliar role men have in the post-feminist world. “A Man’s Work Is Never Done …A Novel About Mentoring Our Sons” will be released in Canada on November 30, 2011
“The number of fatherless children continues to rise. As men, we need to take responsibility not just for being a parent but to be mentors to our sons,” explains Cloughley.
Written as a novel, the book explores the problems young boys today face with their relationships, their identity and the maturation process when they don’t have a father around. Jacob, a troubled teenage boy, establishes a positive relationship with an older neighbour, who himself is examining his life’s legacy as he faces an inevitable demise.
Their conversations and the situations they face together, and with Jacob’s single mother, uncover the lessons our society needs to learn. This book benefits not only fathers, but sons of absent fathers, single mothers who are trying to be both mother and father, family relationship counselors and school systems, to name a few.
