VELCROW RIPPER’S AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY FIERCE LIGHT:
WHEN SPIRIT MEETS ACTION TO OPEN IN VANCOUVER ON MAY 15

E1 Entertainment Canada is pleased to announce that filmmaker Velcrow Ripper’s FIERCE LIGHT: WHEN SPIRIT MEETS ACTION, a moving and enlightening documentary that explores the reaches of spiritual activism, will open in Vancouver on May 15. Winner of the NFB’s Most Popular Canadian Documentary Award at 2008 the Vancouver International Film Festival, FIERCE LIGHT is directed, written and photographed by Toronto-based Velcrow Ripper, the acclaimed director of the groundbreaking documentary Scared Sacred.
In these times of crisis, there is an electric charge in the air, a burgeoning renewal amongst both the people who have focused their lives on spirit, and those whose lives are centered around the struggle for change. FIERCE LIGHT is a feature documentary that captures this exciting movement of Spiritual Activism that is exploding around the planet, and the powerful personalities that are igniting it. Fueled by the belief that ‘another world is possible’, acclaimed filmmaker Velcrow Ripper (Scared Sacred) seeks out today’s stories of what Martin Luther King called ‘Love in Action’, and Gandhi called ‘Soul Force’; what Ripper is calling ‘Fierce Light’.  It is the way of the Sacred Warrior, uncompromisingly nonviolent, with a power that radiates from the heart and outwards. It is that same spirit that swept Barack Obama into the White House ‘undeniably hopeful, and full of possibility. FIERCE LIGHT: When Spirit Meets Action reveals what’s possible when human beings are at their absolute best.

FIERCE LIGHT features some of the most remarkable spiritual activists of our times including: Archbishop Desmond Tutu; Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Alice Walker (The Color Purple); U.S. Congressman and Civil Rights Leader, American Civil Rights Leader, John Lewis; Buddhist peace activist and monk Thich Nhat Hanh; actor turned activist, Daryl Hannah; The South Central Farmers of Los Angeles, famed tree-sitter Julia Butterfly Hill, as well as Van Jones, founder of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights in Oakland California, a strategy and action ‘incubator’ working towards justice, opportunity and peace in urban America.  Jones was recently appointed Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise & Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) by President Obama.
Multiple award-winning documentary filmmaker, writer and sound designer, Velcrow Ripper garnered international attention with his feature-length documentary Scared Sacred. Ripper has explored some of the most important issues of our time. His twenty-eight films and videos include: In the Company of Fear, a documentary on non-violent
resistance to the ‘dirty war’ in Colombia; the Golden Gate Award winning doc Open Season, about bear hunters and the activists who protest the hunt; and the multiple award-winning feature documentary, Bones of the Forest examining the struggle to save the ancient forests of British Columbia (Best of the Festival – Hot Docs, 1996 Genie award for Best Feature Doc).
Ripper is a graduate of Concordia University, and was a founder of the Gulf Island Film and Television School (GIFTS). He made his first documentary Iran the Crisis, at the age of 16. In 1995 he created the first artist driven web project at the Banff Centre for the Arts, and has served as a film instructor at the prestigious Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, as well as the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto. He is currently developing the feature documentaries Evolve Dissolve: Another World is Here and Redvolution: Dare to Disturb the Universe. Ripper is currently a resident of Toronto Island.
