More About Tyler Hoffman

My dream as a kid was to become an MLB Umpire.  After finishing my Recreation & Sports Admin program from Vancouver Island University, I attended the Academy of Professional Umpiring and was fortunate to graduate with honours and be awarded a Minor League Spring Training assignment. I spent 5 years in MiLB reaching the AA level and was an Instructor, before leaving in 2001.

When I left baseball in 2001 I decided to build a financial planning practice. This eventually became a multi-advisor office and I sold the client base in 2015 to a private equity firm for 3x earnings.  It wasn’t easy in the early years as everyone knew me in my hometown as the “Umpire.”  The best thing I did was to move from Qualicum Beach to Victoria, and then finally Vancouver, as it allowed me to reinvent myself and expand my network.  I was more afraid of not making it, then the fear of the unknown when moving to a new city.  I guess being an Umpire, I never knew what was coming next but I was confident in my training that I could handle anything.  Ask me about Portland and Battle Creek and Lansing!  This certainly carried over into business.
