Beyond Vanity is a feature documentary that follows Mona Ling Leung, a hairdresser with 27 years in the business, on a global journey to bring more mindfulness and holistic methods into the hair and beauty industry—taking it beyond vanity.

Throughout the course of this journey, however, Mona is challenged to go beyond vanity herself—awakening to her shadow of dissatisfaction and lifelong trauma while struggling to convince her very own clients to use the holistic products she is championing.

Now, in searching for her own self-love and acceptance, this film is turning into a human story of a woman finding her empowerment, voice and truth. One that we hope to share with the world.

About Mona Ling Leung – The Conscious Hairdresser

Mona fell in love with fashion, hair, and makeup from a young age; through social
conditioning these interests were a way to make her feel valued. As such, Mona leaned
into the beauty industry as an internationally recognized hairstylist, winning competitions
and awards. During her first pregnancy, she began to explore the world of natural
products and alternative therapies. Since then, Mona’s interest in wellness and
spirituality erupted into her being described by her Chinese medicine doctor as “not
knowing anyone who jumps deeper into the healing pool.” Mona felt a part of her inner
child shouting out, “Who are you and why are you here?!” and this lead to her forfeiting
her seemingly perfect life, partner & salon. Mona gave up the “big house” and “fancy
car” to dive deeper into finding her truth, her purpose and personal power. Still in
designer heels & false lashes, she sets out to unite like minded hairdressers to elevate
the industry for the ultimate vision of vital health, happiness and even the possibility of
living in bliss.
