What is Nonviolent Communication?

Imagine connecting with the human spirit, in each person, in any situation.

Imagine interacting with others in a way that allows everyone’s needs to be equally valued.

Imagine creating organizations and life-serving systems responsive to our needs and the needs of our environment.

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) helps connect us with what is alive in ourselves and in others moment-to-moment, with what we or others could do to make life more wonderful, and with an awareness of what gets in the way of natural giving and receiving.

NVC language strengthens our ability to inspire compassion from others and respond compassionately to others and ourselves. NVC guides us to reframe how we express ourselves, how we hear others and resolve conflicts by focusing our consciousness on what we are observing, feeling, needing, and requesting.

Nonviolent Communication Language: It awakens empathy and honesty, and is sometimes described as “the language of the heart.”

Catherine Strickland – I am passionate about helping people bring more harmony, authenticity and personal connection into their lives through effective communication.  I believe that typical patterns of communication can create barriers between people that lead to misunderstanding, conflict and isolation.  This is particularly tragic in parent/child relationships where attachment and trust are essential to the healthy emotional development of the child. I am grateful to have had a challenging and fulfilling 20 year career as a consultant in the field of climate change and environmental management.  Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to provide professional facilitation, advisory and analysis services to many corporate, non-profit and government clients.  As an entrepreneur and business person, I know the value of effective communication and have developed skills in teaching, facilitation and coaching.
My professional training includes an undergraduate degree in engineering from the University of BC and a master’s degree in resource and environmental management from Simon Fraser University, bachelor-level university courses in child development, learning and learning disabilities, and four years of part-time training in Nonviolent Communication.  I am currently pursuing certification as a trainer in Nonviolent Communication through a one-year intensive program.
I have experience delivering Nonviolent Communication workshops and training to teachers and adults and providing one-on-one communication coaching to parents and children.  I have also facilitated multi-stakeholder processes and workshops on environmental issues in India, the US and Canada.

Elaine Muldrew was born in Scotland and has spent many years living abroad and finally settling in Horseshoe Bay, BC. Initially working as a Project Manager of commercial building projects in London, UK, she has combined her love of architecture and design with bringing up her 2 children. During this time, Elaine indulged herself in the art world, curating Art Shows and writing a screenplay and 2 books. The challenge of relocating frequently with small children led her to search for some way to find peace of mind for herself and maintain her support of her family.   Also, as a person of a similar yet different culture, Elaine was frequently faced with a difficulty to understand others and be fully understood herself.  Discovering the process of Compassionate Communication, she has found an ability to express herself in an honest way and hear the wishes of others behind their words and actions. This has transformed all her relationships, and she finds the impact it has had on her family to be the greatest benefit of all.  Elaine now works to integrate the Compassionate Communication consciousness and social change practice to all areas of her life and is passionate about passing it on to others.
