DOPE IS DEATH is the story of how Dr. Mutulu Shakur, stepfather of Tupac Shakur, along with fellow Black Panthers and the Young Lords, combined community health with radical politics to create the first acupuncture detoxification program in America in 1973 – a visionary project eventually deemed too dangerous to exist in America.

Mia has made two documentaries, INSIDE LARA ROXX (2011) and DEPROGRAMMED (2015). She was the recipient of the prestigious Don Haig Award for outstanding achievement as an emerging filmmaker in 2012. Her films have been presented worldwide at film festivals, on TV broadcasts, theatrically and on digital platforms such as Netflix. In 2016 she wrote and directed her first virtual reality experience called DEPROGRAMMED VR (2016) which won the coveted IDFA DocLab Award for Digital Storytelling that year. She is currently in development on her first narrative feature film called THE TOUCH OF HER FLESH and in post-production on her latest documentary feature called DOPE IS DEATH (2020).

About Mia

Mia Donovan is a filmmaker and award-winning photographer. She moved to Montreal at age seventeen to escape her hometown of Moncton, New Brunswick. She holds a BFA from Concordia University. As an artist Mia’s work focuses on humanizing people who have often been misrepresented by the media.  Her first documentary film, Inside Lara Roxx, follows ex-porn star Lara Roxx over a tumultuous 5-year-period as she struggles to build a new identity and find hope in the wake of her past.  She is currently working on her second feature-film inspired by the events surrounding her stepbrother’s deprogramming from an alleged Satanic-cult in the early 1990’s.
