John Shield’s remarkable career has spanned theology to economics, negotiations to senior labour management. A deep love of culture and place has infused his environmental consciousness. John is recognized internationally as a leader in the labour movement and an advocate for win/win bargaining. A deep interest in spirituality led him to contemporary cosmology, which is illuminating a deeper understanding of the universe. For the past twenty years he has explored the connection between science and spirituality.

Born in NY City, Shields holds a Masters Degree in theology from St. Paul’s College in Washington, DC, where he worked with Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement. He went on to teach popular theology in Canada and the US. He left the church and moved to British Columbia in 1969. An interest in social justice led him to the labour movement where he was a champion for women’s equality work. He was President of the BC Government and Service Employees Union (BCGEU) for fourteen years.

He has been teaching Labour Relations and Negotiations at Vancouver Island University.

Here what John said about his book: “The Priest Who Left His Religion – In Pursuit of Cosmic Spirituality “ –  From my Grandfather’s prophecy that I would be the first American Pope to my ordination as a Paulist priest, my early life was steeped in religion. I taught popular theology in Canada and the United States until the Pope had rejected the teaching of Vatican II about the Bible and the finding of the new scholarship. The new discovery was that the church in the fifth century made a fundamental error in interpreting the Bible’s teaching about Original Sin. The new discovery could have returned the church to the message of love and unity that Jesus had taught. Instead the church suppress the new knowledge, many theologians were silenced.

I left the priesthood and the church and began a 20 year long search for a spirituality to fill the void of the loss of my religion. My introduction to NASA’s discovery about the origin of the universe opened a new worldview that has been my passion since the early 90s.

This book chronicles my journey into the new awareness from science about a radical new perception of the cosmos and its profound effect on my spirituality. The conscious, unified universe has inspired my awe and passion for an entirely new way of experiencing everything.

Upcoming Event:

Sunday November 13 John Shields will offer an illustrated workshop at Unity of Vancouver, 5840 Oak Street. John will tell the story of how he discovered the spirituality of the universe, as well as the shocking story of how the Pope denied and covered up the discovery by modern scholars that there was no Original Sin. Reviewing the revelation that the Adam and Eve story in Genesis was never intended to be history, Shields discusses how the Catholic Church turned its back on the truth and pretended that the shocking information did not exist.

He will track his own life and his journey to the discovery that the universe is conscious and dynamically alive. He shows how everyone is connected in the oneness of the cosmos. The workshop fee is $30 and includes a copy of the book, The Priest Who Left His Religion – In Pursuit of Cosmic Spirituality. His book is available on Amazon.ca for $23.95 + tax.
